Ira Driver

1950 - 2025

A memorial service to celebrate and remember the life of Ira “Grant” Driver, Jr., will be 11:00 a.m. Friday, May 23, 2025, at Claremore First Methodist Church. Grant passed away at his home with his family at his side on Sunday, May 18, 2025. He was 75.

Born in Tulsa, OK, on January 24, 1950, to Ira Grant and Alice (Grider) Driver, Grant was raised and educated in Claremore and graduated from Claremore High School. Grant continued his education at Okmulgee Tech where he received his certification as an auto-diesel mechanic. He received his Bachelor of Science in business from Cameron University in Lawton, OK, and his teaching certificate from Northeastern State University in Tahlequah, OK. On August 10, 1974, in Altus, OK, Grant married the love of his life, Emily Dial. Their marriage was gifted with 2 children, David and Jeana. Grant provided for his family, working as a mechanic at Suburban Chevrolet in Claremore, retiring from there as their Service Manager. Not ready to enjoy retirement, Grant started teaching at Chelsea Public Schools in 1993, retiring from there in 2013.

A man with a wide variety of interests and talents, Grant could fix almost anything from tables to microwave ovens and did many renovations in the homes he lived in. He was an accomplished woodworker and artisan, making numerous one-of-a-kind pieces of jewelry, carved items, tableware, and stained glass artworks. Having a huge workshop behind his home gave him plenty of room to store his collections of tools. He loved music, especially classic rock, and always had it playing while he worked. Grant had a black belt in Taekwondo and was an instructor in Claremore at Beaven's Martial Arts for over 15 years.

Grant gave back to his community as well. He was the go-to Santa Claus at Christmas. He loved doing this for many local schools and organizations. Perhaps the smile on the children’s faces or even the adults who were still young at heart made this an annual part of Grant’s Christmas celebration. He was part of the Gridiron cast and production through the Claremore Chamber of Commerce for more than 15 years. It was an opportunity for his very dry wit and sense of humor to shine. It also gave him the opportunity to roast some of the local dignitaries. Grant was also part of the cast for Mark Ogle’s murder mystery production called Neosho Falls. Those productions were enjoyed by all who attended and once again allowed Grant’s creative side to shine.

A man who has given of himself to others his whole life has made a lasting impact on countless lives. Grant has left a legacy that will live on in the lives of his family, students, and friends for years to come. Grant is survived by his wife Emily Dial-Driver; children, David O. Driver and wife Thanyakarn, Jeana Lee Driver Starbuck and husband Todd; grandchildren, Evalynne Starbuck and Mira Starbuck; brothers, Clarence Driver and wife Juana, Gary Driver and wife Susan Tolbert; and numerous nieces, nephews, and extended family. David "Hed" Sands

November 12, 1944 — April 12, 2025

Chewey, Oklahoma

(Cherokee Nation)

David Lee Sands known to most as “Hed” passed peacefully from this life and into glory at his home in Chewey in the early morning hours of Saturday, April 12, 2025 surrounded by those he loved at the age of 80 years and 5 months.

David was born in Cherokee County, Oklahoma to Tom Sands and Nanny (Reece) Sands on November 12, 1944. As a boy, he spent his time in the woods, hollers and hills of Briggs and Pumpkin Holler to Chewey and running the banks of the Illinois river with his brothers, cousins and friends. As he got older he enjoyed hunting of all sorts, playing baseball, fast pitch softball, fast cars and chasing a certain pretty girl around at the stomp grounds. Don’t worry, she let him catch her and on June 14, 1976 he married his best friend, help mate and love of his life, Jonita Oakball Sands. From this union came 3 daughters and 1 son. Hed and Jo shared countless loving memories until her passing in January of 2021. David asked Jesus to be his Lord and Savior in 1974 and dedicated his life to following Christ and leading others to Him as well. He never learned to read or write but even so God wrote scripture and songs in David’s heart to share and he did just that. He served as head deacon and song leader at Illinois River Church for the last 47 years. Gifted with a beautiful voice, he was known near and far for his gospel singing in English and Cherokee. He traveled and participated in mission trips from Canada to New Mexico and was always ready and willing to do whatever The Lord called him to do and go wherever The Lord called him to go. He was a fierce prayer warrior and his faith was unmatched. He loved Jesus above all else and his heart’s desire was to see all of his family and friends come to know Jesus as well and for him to see them all in heaven. Always a hard worker, determined provider and protector David held various jobs earlier on and would often travel out of state for work, picking peaches, cutting broom corn and moving cemeteries. He was one of Mr. Tom Tate’s top ranch hands on his ranch, drove a bean picker for Allen Canning Co. and then finally a road grader operator for Adair County district 3 until his retirement in 2011. Retirement didn’t slow him down at all. On any day you could find him building fence, mowing grass, cutting wood, gardening, or just working around his home and taking care of his chickens and dogs. An avid OU Sooners fan Hed could also be found watching his beloved Sooners on tv whenever they played. David loved to laugh and to make people laugh. Known as a jokester, he was always cracking jokes and being silly. His greatest joy was his family and especially his grandchildren. He loved spending time and fellowshipping with everyone and would get everyone together whenever he could to enjoy his famous hog meat. A fluent Cherokee speaking elder, David was a pillar to the Chewey community and well respected by all who knew him. A simple, honest man full of dignity, he lived a simple life richly blessed by God and leaves behind a legacy of life lessons for all of us to follow after. He was a father figure to many, and a wonderful brother and friend. David loved endlessly and was loved in return, he will be dearly missed by all.
