TAHLEQUAH, Okla (Cherokee411). —The Cherokee Nation has launched a new policy offering financial incentives to government employees who earn college degrees.

The Workforce Development Program provides $2,000 for an associate degree, $3,500 for a bachelor’s degree, $4,000 for a master’s degree and $5,000 for a doctoral degree. The incentives apply retroactively to October 2019 and cover nearly 5,800 government employees. Similar plans are in development for the tribe’s business entities, which employ more than 14,000 people worldwide.

The program aims to encourage continuous learning, professional advancement and a stronger workforce through meaningful financial support.

The policy requires a service commitment based on degree level: one year for associate degrees, two years for bachelor’s degrees, and three years for master’s or doctoral degrees. Eligible employees must complete accredited, relevant programs and maintain performance standards.

Deputy Chief Bryan Warner said the program reflects Cherokee community values.

“This is another way we lift each other up and encourage success,” Warner said.

The initiative supplements existing tuition assistance and builds on other employee-focused benefits, including a $15 minimum wage, paid family leave, paid wellness hours and flexible spending accounts.

Chief of Staff Dr. Corey Bunch said the program helps Cherokee Nation attract and retain talent.

“It’s policies like this that help us attract and retain top talent,” Bunch said.

Executive Director of Human Resources Samantha Hendricks said the program promotes workforce development and long-term retention.

“This policy supports our workforce and helps keep talent within the Cherokee Nation,” Hendricks said.
