EBCI’s Chief Michell Hicks Receives SCC Distinguished Alumni Award — Congratulations from Cherokee 411!

Cherokee 411 proudly congratulates Principal Chief Michell Hicks of the Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians on being named Southwestern Community College’s 2025 Distinguished Alumnus — a well-earned recognition of his unwavering dedication to education, leadership, and service.

Chief Hicks, a 1990 graduate of SCC’s Accounting program, exemplifies the spirit of determination. He balanced family, a full-time job, and a vision for Cherokee prosperity while completing his studies — later becoming a CPA and serving as Principal Chief from 2003 to 2015, then returning in 2023.

Beyond political leadership, Chief Hicks has been a champion of workforce development. In partnership with SCC and TERO, he recently helped launch a free Facilities Maintenance Training Program, creating new job opportunities for EBCI citizens.

SCC President Dr. Don Tomas shared: “Chief Hicks represents the very best of Southwestern Community College… His leadership has touched countless lives, and his selection will inspire generations to come.”

From all of us at Cherokee 411 — congratulations, Chief Hicks! Your lifelong commitment to the Cherokee people continues to uplift us all.
