TAHLEQUAH, Okla. —

The United Keetoowah Band of Cherokee Indians (UKB) has regained the right to operate a casino on its trust land in Tahlequah following federal approval of its updated gaming ordinance by the National Indian Gaming Commission (NIGC).

The decision, announced in April, ends years of legal and regulatory uncertainty surrounding the tribe’s ability to oversee gaming operations on its own land. It marks a significant victory for the UKB in asserting its sovereignty and opens the door to future economic development.

“This is a major step forward in securing our economic future and expanding our self-determination as a sovereign tribal nation,” UKB Chief Joe Bunch said in a statement.

The approval by the NIGC means the UKB can now begin planning for casino development and potentially launch a gaming enterprise that could generate revenue, create jobs, and support vital services for tribal citizens.

The UKB had faced multiple challenges over the years, including disputes over trust land status and jurisdiction. The approval of the updated ordinance effectively resolves those issues, providing the tribe with the authority to regulate Class II gaming on its federally recognized trust property.

Tribal leaders say the move aligns the UKB with other sovereign nations that use gaming as a means to support housing, education, and healthcare initiatives.

“This isn’t just about gaming—it’s about our future, our youth, and our ability to invest in our people,” Bunch said.

The decision is expected to have long-term impacts on tribal economic development in northeast Oklahoma.
