About Cherokee 411, Our History

Cherokee 411 was built on a simple but urgent truth: the Cherokee people deserved a
media platform of their own — one that answered to the community, not to outside
interests or politics and politicians. Founded in Broken Arrow, Oklahoma, Cherokee 411
is a majority Cherokee Nation citizen-owned and operated company serving tribal
citizens across all three federally recognized Cherokee nations: Cherokee Nation (CN),
Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians (EBCI) and United Keetoowah Band (UKB).

What began as a community newsletter has grown into the only independent Cherokee
media network in the world — delivering real, relevant, unfiltered Cherokee news and
resources to more than 35,000 subscribers each week across email, social media, and text messaging, and a growing suite of digital tools designed specifically for Cherokee
citizens.

Cherokee 411 is also home to GinaliBot — the first-ever AI assistant designed
specifically for Cherokees. GinaliBot was built to answer Cherokee citizens’ day-to-day
questions when they can’t find answers online, from the comfort of their own home.
Whether navigating tribal services, finding community resources, or connecting with
Cherokee businesses, GinaliBot puts the information our people need directly in their
hands.

“Real. Relevant. Unfiltered. — Independent Cherokee journalism and community resources, by Cherokee people, for Cherokee people.”

Cherokee 411 exists to connect Cherokee citizens with the information, resources, and community connections they need — from tribal government news and scholarship opportunities to business directories, obituaries, and community events. Our platform honors Cherokee language and culture in everything we do, including our use of the Cherokee syllabary developed by Sequoyah. The landmark McGirt v. Oklahoma decision affirmed what Cherokee people have always known: our sovereignty is real, and our future is ours to build. Cherokee 411 was founded with that future in mind — creating the media infrastructure needed to grow a thriving Cherokee economy, connect Cherokee businesses with Cherokee consumers, and ensure that no matter where you live, you are Cherokee everywhere.

THE FOUNDERS

Meet the Team Behind Cherokee 411

Cherokee 411 was co-founded by two Cherokee Nation citizens whose paths mirror the Cherokee experience itself — one who grew up At Large and came home to the heart of Cherokee Nation, and one who grew up deep in Cherokee country and now carries that identity with her wherever life has taken her. Together, they built Cherokee 411 on the conviction that you are Cherokee anywhere, and that Cherokees across the world deserve the tools to connect, do business, and engage with their community no matter where they live.

Cara Cowan Watts – CO-FOUNDER

A Cherokee Nation citizen who grew up At Large, Cara Cowan Watts knows firsthand what it means to be Cherokee beyond the boundaries of the nation — and what it means to come home. She went on to serve 12 years on the Cherokee Nation Tribal Council, dedicating that time to service for Cherokee people nationally across Indian Country. Her years in tribal government gave her a clear-eyed view of the information gaps Cherokee citizens face and the urgent need for independent, community-owned media to fill them. Today she is a small business owner living inside the Cherokee Nation, outside of Claremore, Oklahoma — and is often found fishing on Spring Creek outside of Locust Grove. She co-founded Cherokee 411 to build the media infrastructure needed to grow a thriving Cherokee economy in the post-McGirt era.

Deb Reed – CO-FOUNDER

A Cherokee Nation citizen and former Miss Cherokee (1991–1992), Deb Reed is a native of Oaks in southern Delaware County — raised inside the Cherokee Nation with deep roots in her home community. Her reign as Miss Cherokee opened a door to the world: she went on to earn a Bachelor’s degree in Journalism from the University of Oklahoma, then spent years working in international development with various people groups in Central Asia and the Middle East. Upon her return to the United States, she obtained a Juris Doctor from the University of Tulsa School of Law, and today operates her own law firm. Now living At Large, Deb carries Oaks and the Cherokee Nation with her wherever she goes. She co-founded Cherokee 411 because she knows that Cherokee identity does not stop at a boundary line — and that Cherokees
