THESE FACES BELONG TO OUR COMMUNITY — AND SOMEONE OUT THERE KNOWS THEIR NAMES.
Story by The Pryor Pulse
A photo just surfaced from the 1929-30 school year at Locust Grove — a first grade class of children growing up right here in Cherokee Nation and United Keetoowah Band jurisdictional territory in Mayes County.
Some of those little faces may well be Cherokee kids — children of families who survived allotment, dispossession, and federal assimilation policies — and then showed up for school anyway. ᏣᎳᎩ resilience has always looked like this.
Cherokee Nation citizen and Pryor historian TERRY LAMAR is working to put NAMES to these faces — and he needs your help. If you recognize anyone in this 1929-30 Locust Grove class photo, reach out to him directly at [email protected]
Tag a family who has roots in Locust Grove. Our people have always kept each other’s stories. Help Terry bring these children home by name.
